Can LED Battens Be Used Outdoors or in Damp Areas?

LED battens are a popular choice for outdoor and damp environments, but not all models are suitable for these conditions. To ensure safe and reliable operation, it’s important to choose a batten with the correct IP rating. IP ratings indicate how well a fitting is protected against dust and moisture.

For indoor dry areas, such as hallways or offices, an IP20 or IP40 rated batten is usually sufficient. However, for environments that are exposed to water, steam, or dust, such as garages, external walkways, loading bays, car parks, or industrial wash-down areas, you’ll need a more robust fitting.

An IP65-rated LED batten is fully sealed against dust and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes it ideal for use in damp or outdoor environments where exposure to the elements is a concern.

Weatherproof LED battens are typically designed with features such as:

  • Durable polycarbonate or reinforced housings
  • Rubber gaskets and sealed entry points to prevent water ingress
  • Corrosion-resistant clips and fittings for longevity in harsh environments

They are commonly used in commercial and industrial settings, including food production areas, storage units, agricultural buildings, and public car parks. Some models also support through-wiring, allowing multiple units to be connected in a single run, which is especially useful in large or open spaces.

Always check the product specifications and make sure the IP rating is suitable for the intended environment. If in doubt, consult an electrician or contact our friendly customer satisfaction team.
