Hire a Waste Specialist

Hiring Guide

As fluorescent tubes are hazardous electrical waste, you will need to hire a company which is qualified to handle this type of waste as it’s classed as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). WEEE Regulations were brought in in 2007, to prevent hazardous waste from being disposed of with regular waste. In order to move the fluorescent tubes from your premises, you’ll need to complete a WEEE consignment note which tracks the movement of hazardous waste. You can download the document here.

Depending on the amount of waste that needs removing, you may need to register as a hazardous waste producer. You can find out more about registration by visiting the Environment Agency website or call the helpline on 08708 506 506.

In most cases, you can prepare your lamps for collection by placing them in cardboard sleeves which new fluorescent tubes are delivered in. Some companies may provide a specific container for you to store the tubes in for collection. If in doubt, check with the company you’ve chosen to collect your tubes.
